Session on Rally for Rivers - 2017
The Better Citizen initiative of JGIS organized an awareness session on Rally for Rivers on 11th August 2017, Friday from 8:00 am to 8:40 am for students of classes 1 to 8 and for students from grades 9 to 12 on 16th August 2017. Rally For Rivers is a breakthrough campaign launched by Isha Foundation to save the life lines of this country and to revive our rivers . The importance of water in our life and the grave plight of rivers with 25% of India turning into a desert, was highlighted during the session. The solution involves creating and maintaining tree cover for a minimum of one kilometer on either side of the entire river length and half a kilometer for tributaries. This River Rejuvenation Policy recommendation will be presented to the central government. The students were encouraged to join the movement by registering their support for the policy by giving missed call and encouraging other people to do so, thereby participating in a democratic process where they could affect policy making. The session helped to sensitize youngsters about issues facing us as and how as responsible global citizens it becomes our prime duty to do our bit to sustain our resources for future generations.
