Election for Head Boy & Head Girl - 2017
Election is an organized process through which the heads of a democratic country are elected. It gives the people the most important political right- Right to vote. At JGIS, this year too we elected the Head Boy and the Head Girl through this procedure. We conducted a mock election. The purpose of it was to give the children a ‘Hands on’ experience on the conduction of election. We followed the same procedures as is followed in the actual election.
On 22nd June the eligibility criteria were announced in the assembly. Those were as follows:
The Head Boy and Head Girl of JGIS-
- Should be from class XII.
- Should have completed at least 2 years in JGIS.
- Must have scored minimum 70 percent in the previous external examination.
- Should have made a mark either in activities or games.
Those who felt they were eligible for the posts took the nomination forms. They were asked to return the filled in forms on 23rd June with a symbol drawn in their nomination forms.
13 of them submitted their nominations forms.
On the same day the nomination forms were scrutinized and the names of the eligible candidates were announced. All 13 were declared eligible.
Campaigning began on 27th June. The candidates campaigned for 3 days i.e.27th, 28th and 29th
An election commission was set up for the fair and smooth conduction of the election. It comprised different committees and officials. It was headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, to support him, there were two Election Commissioners. There was a Returning Officer, a team of media coverage and the Poll Officials. All the above said officials were chosen from class XI (Humanities) and class IX.
On the 3rd day the Election Commissioner spoke about the need of election in a democracy, why it was being held in the school, how to cast vote, how a vote can be invalid, what if there is a tie and also the commission appealed to the voters (who were from classes VII-XII) to cast votes judiciously without being influenced by any kind of pressure.
Finally, the day of polling arrived. It was on 30th June. The school auditorium was converted into a constituency. Four booths were made. Secret voting was done. Each booth had a laptop and a technician from the school. Names and the symbols appeared on the screen. The voters had to click twice, for the Head Boy and Head Girl. Before entering the booth, the voters’ names were checked from the electoral roll and a mark was made on the index finger of their left-hand with indelible ink. The voters voted class-wise. After all the voters were done, the officials cast their votes. The votes were counted. All four booths gave their individual result, out of which the master result was generated.
The names of the winners was handed over to the Principal by the Returning Officer. Finally the result was announced by the Principal. The entire process took 1 hour 20 minutes to complete.
